Mara Niederprüm

Mara Niederprüm (*1996, Essen, Germany) lives and works in Halle (Saale). She studied communication design at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle and graduated in 2023. She is represented by MüllerschönRecker, Munich. With the collective k.tiev, she creates installations and public art commissions.

I approach wood with a technical eye and draw out everything the material has to offer. I paint on wood, mill it, drill into it, and secure it with dowels, often removing material rather than adding it. These interventions soften the material’s hardness. Milled surfaces take on a textural quality. Knotholes, cracks, and irregularities are not corrected. They remain visible and become part of the composition. Sometimes I repair areas that were never damaged, thereby questioning the boundary between imperfection and intention. The wood always remains the central focus. I call this practice practical poetry.
